Job Specific Training

The agency provides a variety of training opportunities to educate new employees on the agency.  Beyond this training there is also a need to provide training that is specific to the needs of each job classification.  This training will come in many forms and may include classroom instruction, online training, mentoring or resource manuals for self direction.  The following information provides information on the current job specific training programs and resources available to new employees.

Assistants

Along with attendance at agency mandated training,  assistants receive job specific training from employees within the district.  One of the most valuable training tools for new assistants in the field is the Case Management Training (CMS) which is located in the Training News section of this website.

Rehabilitation Counselors

New rehabilitation counselors are assigned a mentor within their district if one is available.  Currently we have trained mentors in 13 out of 15 districts.  The mentor will work with the new employee on skills necessary for success in this position.  The mentor does not take the place of the manager, but rather enhances the learning environment by providing hands-on assistance as the new employee develops in this role.  Counselors also attend all mandatory programs for the agency to further develop job related skills.

Job Placement

New job placement professionals work with with district staff and the Job Placement Coordinator to orient to this job role.  To assist with the orientation the job placement team has developed a checklist of competencies that all new job placement personnel need in order to be successful in their employment.  These skills will be obtained through attendance at agency mandated training programs, orientation to the role with current job placement professionals and leadership within the district.  New job placement professionals will also participate in mandated online training to learn more about the field of rehabilitation as well as specifics regarding job placement professional responsibilities.

Rehabilitation Technologists

Rehabilitation technologists are required to have, or be working towards, and have an eligible background for, the RESNA ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) certification.  Please use the link provided view the RESNA website for additional information on the requirements for this certification.

New staff are oriented to this role by working with the Branch Manager as well as the other techs froms around the state.  A list serve is used to communicate information and questions in order to provide consistency in the program and identifying vendors for frequently purchased equipment.  The techs utilize one another to develop and refine their skills.

Each year the agency partners with the Human Development Institute from the University of Kentucky to provide a Summer AT Workshop program that allows all agency rehabilitation technologist to obtain required professional courses for certification maintenance.
